How to Plant Basket with Begoinas
Our begonia plants arrive ready to be transplanted into your decorative baskets or containers. Follow these simple steps for a stunning display:
Select a Basket: A 30–35cm (12–14") basket is ideal. Use a liner if you're using a wire basket. Begonias also do well in ceramic or plastic hanging containers with good drainage.
Prepare the Compost: Use high-quality multi-purpose compost. Mixing in slow-release fertilizer will support healthy growth. Consider adding water-retaining granules to reduce how often you need to water.
Position the Plants: Carefully remove the begonias from their pots/ trays. For trailing varieties (like Begonia ‘illiumination’), place them near the edges to spill over the sides. Upright types can go in the center.
Fill & Firm: Top up the basket with compost, gently firming around the roots. Leave a 2–3cm gap at the top to make watering easier.
Water Thoroughly: Give your basket a generous watering to settle the compost and hydrate the plants.
Basket Plant Care Tips
Basket Plant Care Tips
Watering: Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Begonias don’t like to dry out completely, especially in baskets which can dry quickly.
Feeding: Feed every 10–14 days with a balanced liquid fertilizer to encourage ongoing flowering.
Deadheading: Some begonia varieties are self-cleaning, but for others, gently remove faded flowers to promote more blooms.
Light Needs: Begonias do well in partial shade or filtered sun. Morning sun and afternoon shade is ideal for most varieties.
Protection: Avoid overwatering in cooler weather and protect from strong winds which can damage fleshy stems and flowers.
